Summary

Canada's certification rules for licence-exempt radio devices, including auditory assistance transmitters at 72-76 MHz and 216-217 MHz.

Key findings

  • Says 72-73, 74.6-74.8 and 75.2-76.0 MHz are used exclusively for auditory assistance and wireless microphones, with a 200 kHz authorised bandwidth, an average field strength of no more than 80 mV/m at 3 m inside it and 1.5 mV/m outside it.
  • Elsewhere (Annex A) lists carrier frequencies in 72-73 MHz for radio control of model aircraft and in 75.4-76 MHz for general remote controls.
  • Opens 216-217 MHz to auditory assistance, medical telemetry, goods tracking and law enforcement devices at up to 100 mW peak output and 160 mW e.i.r.p., with 5, 12.5, 25 or 50 kHz channel plans; law enforcement has exclusive use of 216.45-216.50 MHz.
  • States that all 216-217 MHz transmissions are on a no-interference, no-protection basis, especially with respect to TV channel 13 (210-216 MHz), and advises avoiding 216-216.3 MHz, where channel 13's sound carrier image falls.
  • Requires the user manual to tell installers near an active channel 13 to reduce or adjust power, to test with a TV set with a rabbit-ear antenna tuned to channel 13 at the perimeter of the coverage area, and otherwise to use a channel near 217 MHz rather than 216 MHz.

Limits

Certification rules for transmitters: nothing on audio quality, coverage or receivers. It does not explain how the 72-76 MHz bands can be exclusive to auditory assistance and wireless microphones while Annex A also lists model aircraft and remote control frequencies there.
