Summary
The IEC standard for measuring and specifying the parts of a hearing loop system, such as loop amplifiers, microphones and neck loops, for type testing.
Key findings
- Applies to the components of audio-frequency induction-loop systems: amplifiers, microphones and other components such as playback equipment. Its stated aim is accurate and uniform presentation of manufacturers' specifications that standardised measurements can verify, and it is intended for type testing.
- Is to be used together with IEC 60118-4, which sets the performance of the installed system. It does not deal with safety (IEC 60065), electromagnetic compatibility or human exposure to electromagnetic fields.
- The public preview's contents list amplifier characteristics to be specified, including magnetic field strength, frequency response, automatic gain control and compression, and the phase error of the networks that drive phased loop arrays.
- The preview also lists clauses on neck loops (input voltage, input impedance, frequency response), a normative annex with a test jig for measuring neck loops, specifications for loop listeners and assistive listening devices, and recommendations for monitoring devices.
- Defines a telecoil as a magnetic pickup coil intended to receive signals from a loop system to IEC 60118-4, which can be part of a hearing aid or of another receiving device.
- The catalogue lifecycle metadata dates edition 1.0 to 27 January 2010, Amendment 1 and consolidated edition 1.1 to 17 December 2014, and Amendment 2 and consolidated edition 1.2 to 27 November 2017. The individual amendments were not read, so their technical changes are not established here.
Limits
Read from the IEC webstore abstract and the publisher's public preview (contents, foreword, scope and definitions); the measurement methods and any recommended values are paywalled. It is a type-test standard for components, so it says nothing about whether a particular installed loop performs. The consolidated edition 1.2 combines the 2010 first edition with amendments of 2014 and 2017; the IEC lists 2029 as its stability date.
