Summary
The hearing aid manufacturers' 2025 UK consumer survey, including how many hearing aid owners know their aids have a telecoil and where they use it.
Key findings
- Page 51 asks where owners use their telecoil and lists settings without distinguishing room loops, counter loops or receiver-neckloop paths. The school/university choice does not isolate venue-provided equipment from personal equipment or classroom use; it establishes a reported setting only. No recall interval is printed for this item.
- Page 13 reports self-declared hearing loss in 9.9% of adults aged 18 and over in the UK screening sample (n=15,118), rising from 5.3% at ages 45-54 to 9.8% at 55-64, 15.9% at 65-74 and 30.0% above age 74.
- Page 14 gives hearing aid adoption as 50.5% among people with self-declared loss (screening subgroup n=1,382), and 58.8% among those aged 65 and older with self-declared loss. These screening bases differ from the detailed questionnaire samples of 718 owners and 567 non-owners.
- Page 5 states that 5% of hearing aid owners report zero hours of use; ownership alone does not establish use at a venue.
- Page 51 labels the telecoil-frequency chart as 68 owners equipped with telecoils: never 10%, rarely 32%, occasionally 32%, often 23%, very often 3%. The locations chart labels its base as 68 owners who use telecoils, with overlapping answers; additional locations are office buildings 20%, conference rooms 17% and drive-through/ticket window/bank counter 7%.
- Page 51 labels the telecoil-satisfaction chart as 59 users: very dissatisfied 0%, dissatisfied 2%, somewhat dissatisfied 1%, neutral 8%, somewhat satisfied 34%, satisfied 39%, very satisfied 16%. The page does not reconcile the 68-person use-location base with this 59-person satisfaction base; telecoil use includes telephone and other purposes beyond venues.
- Methods (pp. 8-9) describes interlocked age/gender quotas, a soft regional quota, panel recruitment and weighting of the target samples to the representative screening sample. Weighted percentages need not equal raw subgroup counts divided by the total sample.
- 11% of UK hearing aid owners (n=718) said their hearing aids have a telecoil, 26% said they do not and 63% did not know.
- Among owners with a telecoil (n=68), the places they use it most were theatres or auditoriums (38%), schools or universities (31%), churches (31%), train stations (27%) and airports (25%); 19% use it with the phone.
- 31% of hearing aid owners use a hearing aid app, and 76% of them are satisfied with it.
- 69% of owners received a free NHS hearing aid, and the median age of hearing aids at replacement was four years.
- Page 9 describes screening 15,118 people from large panellist pools using interlocked age/gender quotas and a soft regional quota, based on census data. The detailed samples of 718 owners and 567 non-owners were then balanced by weighting to the screening interviews; the page does not specify online recruitment or weighting of the screening sample itself.
Limits
Industry-commissioned, and features are self-reported: with 63% unsure, the figure shows what owners know rather than what their aids have. The report describes panel recruitment and quotas but does not establish how well the panel covers people outside those pools. The report is a slide deck with no publication date beyond 2025 and does not ask about Auracast or which venue systems people meet.
