Summary

The government publication reproduces the national building-code requirement for enhanced listening in specified assembly spaces and the associated sign requirement.

Key findings

  • The document's amendment history dates Amendment 2 to 10 October 2011. The reproduced page containing G5.3.5-G5.3.6 is marked July 1992; the amendment date is not the date the hearing provision was introduced.
  • G5.3.5 requires listening systems that enable enhanced hearing by people with hearing aids. Its application limits are communal non-residential assembly spaces occupied by more than 250 people; any theatre, cinema or public hall; and assembly spaces in old people's homes occupied by more than 20 people.
  • G5.3.6 requires enhanced listening systems to be identified by signs meeting Clause F8. These two provisions name no transmission technology, receiver quantity or numerical coverage target.
  • The opening explanation distinguishes the Building Code from an acceptable solution or verification method: a design following the latter must be accepted as meeting the related code provisions, but other means are possible.

Limits

Read the government publication's introductory material and reproduced G5 provisions, especially printed pages 3-4. This is the 2011 consolidated publication, not a survey of subsequent legislation or local decisions. The separately referenced NZS 4121:2001 and F8 technical sign provisions were not read. No receiver counts or loop mandate are inferred from those references.
