Summary
A loop maker's summary of the measurements it says a hearing loop must pass at commissioning against IEC 60118-4, with the target figures.
Key findings
- Says every induction loop should be commissioned after installation against IEC 60118-4, usually by the installing engineer, to find and fix faults.
- Gives these targets: field strength of 400 mA/m (a 1 kHz sine wave) within ±3 dB over the listening area; frequency response from 100 Hz to 5 kHz within ±3 dB of the 1 kHz level across the coverage area; magnetic background noise of -32 dB or better (A-weighted).
- Says the area of use should be defined first, with measurements at both seated and standing heights where the audience may do both, and that diagrams should mark measured areas and any that fall outside the standard, for example because of interference from transformers.
- Says spill should be measured and marked on the coverage map where other loops are nearby, and that where confidentiality matters the distance at which the signal becomes inaudible should be recorded.
- Notes that speech and music typically read -9 to 0 dB (peak) on a meter rather than within ±3 dB, and says the results go on what it calls a "Certificate of Test and Conformity" handed to the owner with loop receivers and instructions.
Limits
A manufacturer's summary of a paywalled standard; the figures have not been checked here against IEC 60118-4 itself. The page shows no date (its metadata gives first publication on 5 April 2018 and a last change on 26 July 2023). It promotes Ampetronic's training courses and gives no data on how often installed loops meet these targets.
